VBS! A Huge Success!
The week of June 20-24, 2011 will stand out as a spiritual highlight this year for our church. Sixteen children attended VBS, ranging in age from 4 years to nearly 15 years. The Presbyterian Church of Salado was a fun and active place to be.
The theme was “Building your Life on Jesus” and lessons were based on the New Testament parables of the wise and foolish builders. Our pastor put in a 60 hour week to keep us all on-track and he came every day, in spite of his house alarm going off at 2 am one night and the air-conditioning (A/C) going off another hot, muggy evening.
John Schahn, Jean Teal, and Evelyn Thompson taught the children music, words and sign language to songs about building foundations on Jesus, the Rock, or the consequences of building on the sandy values of secular life. Every student built a rock house that they took home, thanks to the planning and hard work of Jim Walls. Carl helped each student to paint a rock with their name and connection to Jesus.
Sara Pettijohn organized a project of putting together 10 Hygiene Kits for distribution by the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program. Children added personal notes. Bev Jones took them to Brookshire Brothers grocery store to purchase food bags and learn about the nutritional value of food items for the Salado Food Pantry.
Meanwhile, LaQuita Arner kept everyone happy with wonderful snacks; thanks also to many generous ladies who brought food and drinks. The young children were treated to story-telling by Shirley Pinkston, while Bob and Gidget Todd and Mabel Page delighted us all with a morning of dance instruction.
The game room got a huge workout. Jim Arner, Pete Stebbins, Bill Pinkston, and anyone else who happened to stroll through during the week became our referees and crowd-control experts. To avert any alarm, John Pettijohn assured the session that our new Demand Control System would easily keep the A/C costs nearly normal. Thanks for installing the DCS to Britt Healey, John, Bill, and Walt Tindell!
In case you are wondering, nearly 50 adults contributed their time and effort. If you did not get included this year, we are looking forward to VBS in 2012. A particular thanks to all the parents and grandparents who brought the children and supported us all week.
